Vintner Spotlight: Todd Newman of Dakota Shy

dakotaDakota Shy, currently located in the heart of Napa Valley at the base of Pritchard Hill, dates back to the 1850’s. With beautiful redwood and magnolia trees scattered throughout the estate and 1.2 acres of both Italian and Spanish olives (from which Dakota Shy presses their own oil), they are known for their stunning views and expansive history. Grapes are sourced from all over Napa Valley- from the valley floor AVA’s of Oakville, St. Helena, and Calistoga, to the mountains of Howell, Veeder, and Pritchard Hill, to the bench of Oak Knoll.

“There is so much soul here you can’t help but be moved by the beauty and history of the property”, says Todd Newman, a founder of this incredible, capital intensive wine brand.

Todd helped supply the passion, hard- work, and tenacity that created the foundation of the vineyard’s success. Prior to creating Dakota Shy, he first relocated from North Dakota to Napa Valley in 2003 for a position at the famed Michelin starred Martini House restaurant in St. Helena. It was under the guidance of this restaurant that he learned the wine business through the eyes of hospitality and service. In 2005, he was hired by Tom Garrett at Revana Family Vineyard to assist with winemaking in the cellar, where he eventually transitioned to directing Revana’s national sales program after increasing his wine education and skills under world- famous winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett. In 2008, he utilized these skills and knowledge to create Dakota Shy along with his longtime friend and colleague, Tom.

Through the passion that these two friends have created, Dakota Shy crafts wines of substance- complex, sophisticated, and powerful Cabernets. Wine is and continues to be the vehicle that allows Todd to dream and pursue the value of living, as his wine is meant to be more than just a beverage, a way of life in itself.

Along with participating in DCWAF's Wine Auction this year, Todd will be pouring Dakota Shy at a Patron Dinner alongside chefs Matthew Basford and Tim Creehan.
