No one before Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta had ever dared to produce a Bordeaux-style wine based on cabernet sauvignon grapes on Italian soil, let alone in an area such as Bolgheri, which was unknown to the world of wine.
Thanks to his pioneering passion and innovative decision developed in the 1940's, Sassicaia was born.
Initially created as a "family wine", the first vintage to appear on the market was 1968. During a Decanter tasting in 1978 in London, the 1972 vintage was declared the best Cabernet Sauvignon among 33 wines from 11 countries. Since then, Sassicaia is being acclaimed by wine critics worldwide, and this success is recognized to have put Bolgheri on the wine map of the world. Within the new appellation "Bolgheri DOC" granted in 1994, Sassicaia was honoured with a special sub-zone "Sassicaia DOC", being so far the only wine in Italy with its own appellation.

Nicolo` Incisa della Rocchetta, son of Mario, took over the commercialization and production in the 70’s and has devoted most of his energies to further developing Sassicaia, while maintaining the tradition of innovation and excellence, as well as the philosophy and principles of production, created by his father. At the same time, he was able to transform Sassicaia in a national and international success.

Piero Incisa della Rocchetta is the grand-son of Mario and nephew of Nicolò. After finishing his university studies in the USA, he founded in 2004 Bodega Chacra in the Río Negro region of Patagonia, Argentina, which produces old-vine Pinot Noir. He presently runs his winery, dividing his time between New York City, Italy and Patagonia. He also represents on different occasions the Italian family estate of Tenuta San Guido, that his uncle Nicolò manages since 40 years.
