Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Will_Phelps2016Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned winery committed to crafting world-class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena, the winery now controls and farms 390 acres of vines in Napa Valley on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros, and South Napa.

In pursuit of an ideal location to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, in 1999 the Phelps family purchased land near the town of Freestone on the western Sonoma Coast, planted 100 acres of vineyards, and built a dedicated winery.

Phelps is best known for its flagship wine, Insignia, a Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varieties first produced in 1974.

Grandson of winery founder Joe Phelps and son of winery President Bill Phelps, Will Phelps was the second member of his generation to join the family business in 2012. In a Sale Representative position, Will supported the sales and distribution of Joseph Phelps wines in California. In March 2016, Will was promoted to Director of Marketing and joined the Joseph Phelps Executive Management Team. In his new role, Will assumes overall responsibility for the winery’s marketing and public relations initiatives.

Will grew up in Napa Valley where he developed a keen interest in wine. Following graduation from the University of San Diego with a degree in Business Administration, he traveled to France to work the 2008 harvest at Domaine E. Guigal in the Northern Rhône Valley. Will spent the next three years working for Trinitas Cellars in a Regional Sales Manager position with responsibilities in Southern California and the Midwest. He then worked the 2012 harvest at Paul Cluver Winery in Elgin Valley, South Africa before joining Joseph Phelps Vineyards later that year. In 2015, Will received an Executive Wine MBA from Sonoma State University.

He and his wife Amanda reside in Napa with their daughters Emma and Lily.
