Bottles and Blessings

Thanksgiving Day: everyone’s favorite food and family focused holiday that leaves you feeling happy and “stuffed” after delectable servings of turkey, gravy, and casseroles. With traditional menu items well established year after year, you know what should be served on your plate, but do you know what should go in your glass?

Your most popular main course, turkey, is a versatile meat with flexible flavors in regards to wine pairings. We recommend a light-bodied Pinot Noir with berry flavors and deep spices that blend seamlessly with traditional holiday cuisine while remaining soft on one’s palate. Try a 2015 Estate Pinot Noir from our friends at Clos Du Val. Created in Gran Val Vineyard in Napa Valley, the wine’s deep, alluring color combined with aromas of exotic red fruit, flowers, vanilla, and nutmeg flavorings are sure to compliment your main table dishes.

If your preference leans more towards white wine, we recommend pairing a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay to compliment your lush helpings of buttery mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. We’ll be enjoying a 2014 Unfiltered Finch Hollow Chardonnay from Jarvis Estate in Napa Valley. Its rich, golden hues and smooth finish are the perfect match for dressings and gravy.

What is Thanksgiving without mouthwatering pies? A crisp, sweet Riesling with just a slight acidic finish pairs well with dessert. A 2013 Late Harvest Riesling has a lively palate, complete with a touch of lemon, pineapple, and bubblegum aromas to accompany your final course.

Complete your evening by raising a toast to all that you are thankful for this year. A chilled brut with its dry, full bodied bite, is a great glass to end the evening. Try a 2005 Cristal Champagne from Louis Roederer. Its creamy flow of uninterrupted bubbles and rich fruit bouquet is sure to be a crowd pleaser amongst your guests.

Happy Thanksgiving from DCWAF to you!

Cheers!
