A Spotlight on Spring Mountain

The Spring Mountain District of California is nestled quietly between Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, but two of the region's vineyards have managed to make some noise across the world. Though it is a remote area, it boasts small yet beautiful patchwork vineyards and the production of exceptional wines like those of Spring Mountain Vineyard and Fisher Vineyards. The terroir is a combination of volcanic soil and sedimentary rock, and the Pacific breeze uniquely cools afternoon temperatures, followed by warm nights. This moderate climate graces the region with longer growing seasons than most, attributing to the worldwide acclaim these wines have received for intense, yet balanced flavors and delicate tannins.

Spring Mountain Vineyard has been in existence since the late 1800s when Charles Lamme founded the La Perla Estate, now 435 acres, and planted the district's first Cabernet Sauvignon. It has since been expanded to include the vineyards of Frederick and Jacob Beringer, and two additional estates, Chateau Chevalier, a 120 acre vineyard previously owned by Frenchman Fortune Chevalier, and Miravalle, the 257 acre property on which Tiburcio Parrott built his grand home and had also grown olives, and citrus in addition to grapes.

In recent years, Spring Mountain Vineyard has won numerous awards from Decanter Magazine, including "Best Bordeaux Blend in the United States by the world’s leading wine professionals in the 2013 Decanter World Wine Competition " for their 2010 Elivette. If you are able, do not miss an opportunity to visit the winery and enjoy limited production, French-style wines handcrafted in California.

The elegant fruit of Spring Mountain is shared with a truly special family business, Fisher Vineyards. Founded in 1973 by Fred and Juelle Fisher, the couple has created a legacy of world-renowned winemaking by also utilizing grapes from the neighboring Napa Valley. They have passed on this legacy to the next generation as their three children, Whitney, Robert, and Cameron, share their passion for producing fine wine and continuing their parents' dream.

At Fisher Vineyards, the main elements of great winemaking are expressing the uniqueness of the terroir and the art of crafting blends of complimentary varietals from different estates woven together to create complexity and balance. With this philosophy, they are able to grow and produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Proprietary Blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Rosé. This family business, though small, has a large impact on the world of wine enthusiasts. The Fisher family's hands-on approach to producing world-class wine is truly the heart of their business.

We thank both Spring Mountain Vineyard, and Fisher Vineyards for their continued support of the Destin Charity Wine Auction.

Cheers!
